How does a hunchback form?
How does a hunchback form?
A hunchback forms when the neck spine shifts forward and gets misaligned. The misalignment of this spine causes the upper back spine to push up and curve outwards forming a hunchback. What are some of the causes of a hunchback?
There are several things that contribute to the formation of a hunchback. These things vary depending on an individual’s family history, environmental factors and the type of activities or practices one engages in. The following are some of these things:- Osteoporosis
People with osteoporosis often have breakages in their upper spines causing the spinal arch to become bigger causing a swelling below the neck which in time becomes a hunched back.
- Posture
Posture is the position in which you hold your body when either standing or sitting. Good posture in necessary to keep your whole spine in its neutral alignment and reduce development of a hunchback. This requires the shoulders to be pulled back, with the ears above the shoulder blades. By rounding your shoulders, the frontal chest muscles become short and tight meaning your shoulders will stay rounded causing a harmful arch in your back.
- Injury
Injury to the spine caused by sports, accidents or any other sort of traumatic impact can cause the spinal discs to shift or even break. When this happens, the spine tries to realign itself and may form an excessive curve which will cause a hunchback. If the muscles supporting the back are torn or injured, they won’t support the vertebrae thus also letting the spine to curve too far forward.
- Paget’s disease of the bone
Human bones are constantly being broken down and rebuilt but with Paget’s disease, the bone breakdown and formation process is abnormal resulting in over sized, weak and deformed bones. This is one way how a hunchback can form if the spinal bones are affected.
- Congenital kyphosis
This is caused in the womb when the spine of the fetus does not develop correctly. This type of hunched back can usually be treated when the child is still an infant and reduces the appearance and effects of the hunchback.
- Spinal Cancer
Spinal cancer is as a result of a tumor on the spine which affects nerves, spinal alignment and causes deformities such as a hump back.
- Arthritis
Arthritis is the inflammation of the bodily joints and the disintegration of connective tissues. The spine is held together by cartilage and with age, these tissues tend to suffer from wear and tear resulting in joint pain and stiffness. When the spinal joints are affected, a hunched back may form.
- Scheuermann’s disease
Scheuermann’s disease is a form of juvenile osteoporosis and manifests itself mostly in teenagers. The apexes of their spines become rigid so they cannot consciously correct their posture. It has been speculated that the disease is due to genetic factors but it can be treated while the spine is still growing.
Since most causes of a hunchback are medical while others are as a result of the kind of lifestyle one leads, by changing a few habits and consulting the correct practitioners, you can prevent a hunchback from forming. Many of them can be mitigated with early detection and administering the right treatment. There are many other explanations to; how does a hunchback form? These are just some of them.
